Upper School English Curriculum

English is at the core of the Upper School curriculum. Four years of the subject are required for graduation. Classes are taught in very small groups of four to eight students with one teacher. Students are grouped by their individual reading and writing strengths and challenges.

The English curriculum addresses reading and writing skills, comprehension and literary analysis. The program requires a larger block of time and therefore meets more frequently than other disciplines in the Upper School, with one to two full periods per day. Writing composition is a primary focus as a preparation for college level writing.

The curriculum content is tailored to the skill and comprehension levels of each group. As part of MMFS's multi-disciplinary approach, English teachers often choose books that connect with social studies or other curriculum areas.
