Elementary School

The School's Lower Elementary Division offers the youngest students, from ages five to eight, the benefit of an intimate, self-contained learning environment. Capping class size at ten students enables teachers to provide them with the extra supports they need. The program introduces these students to all academic subjects using a multi-sensory approach to learning. It also familiarizes them with the structure
of the school day, including such daily activities as morning meeting and journal writing, and teaches them appropriate classroom behavior.

Building on the foundation acquired in the lower elementary division, students in the Elementary Division, aged eight to ten, solidify and strengthen skills to take on new challenges. Students continue to be cross-grouped for reading and math, and begin to assume greater responsibility for themselves and in relation to others as friendships broaden and their sense of community expands. In this non-threatening, nurturing environment,
students are encouraged to question, communicate and recognize their special needs.

Upper Elementary students, ages ten and eleven, take on even greater responsibility and independence. In addition to expanding and applying skills, they face increased expectations in terms of their ability to organize themselves, manage their time, complete long-term assignments and handle more complex social interactions. As they prepare for the transition to middle school, students in this division acquire a growing sense of themselves as individuals, as learners and in relation to the world at large.
