Welcome From the Head of School

Welcome to Mary McDowell Friends School, one of New York City's leading schools and resource centers for students with learning disabilities. I hope you will get a sense of our vibrant, warm, caring school and community from visiting our webpage.

We opened our doors to the first class of five students in 1984. Since then we have grown to be an institution serving students in elementary through high school. In September 2010, we will welcome our first 9th grade class, and total enrollment will reach 250 students in 23 classes.

As a standard bearer, we provide a multi-sensory, integrated special education that makes a difference in the lives of those we teach. We believe all students can learn when given the individualized attention and specialized resources they need. At the same time, we understand all students are different, and we are deeply committed to helping each individual student learn and thrive.

Founded on Quaker traditions, we offer an inclusive community to students and their families alike. It is our goal, throughout a student's years at Mary McDowell Friends School, to work in partnership with parents to facilitate the best possible outcome for every one of our students. Our efforts extend beyond the classroom commitment to community service. We also offer ongoing public and parent education programs through the Mary McDowell Teaching and Learning Center.

Mary McDowell Friends School is a dynamic place, providing a learning experience that has meaning in the lives of our students and in our community. We hope you will come visit so you can see, and feel, first-hand, what makes Mary McDowell Friends School a truly special place.
