Upper School Social Studies Curriculum
A primary aim of the Upper School social studies curriculum is to educate students to be active and informed members of the global community. Four years of social studies are required for graduation.
The ninth grade curriculum builds directly on eighth grade course work in social studies and current events with a focus on Twentieth Century World History. In tenth grade, students refine and deepen their understanding of the American system of government and focus on the recent history of the United States. The junior year curriculum follows an Area Studies approach, with geographical, cultural and historical components. Asia, Africa and Latin America are possible areas of focus. In the senior year, students choose from an engaging array of courses that are based on themes such as civil rights in America, economics, psychology and urban studies.
